This book explores the matrix of ideas and ideologies that paved the way for the intense intellectual, social and political ferment of post-revolutionary Europe. Its focus on the texts of Jacobin women novelists such as Elizabeth Inchbald, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays and Charlotte Smith strongly contests the hegemony of Romantic poetry which has led to the canonical enshrinement of the writings of William Wordsworth and S T Coleridge.
