An artefact, in the form of an industrial plant, machine, or equipment, has to have reliability built into its design so that it can provide a long and productive working life to its user. At the same time, during its working life, it has to be adequately maintained to ensure that its availability is maximized. Thus terotechnology embraces both reliability engineering and maintenance engineering and management. These two disciplines complement each other, and together enable the pursuit of economic life cycle costs.
