
This study describes the aims and achievements of Japan's Fifth Generation Computer Project, a programme which combines the power of a wide range of computer technologies, including VLSI, computer architecture, software and artificial intelligence, in order to create a future generation of computers. The book explains how the idea of the Fifth Generation Computer Project - also known as the Apollo Project - was conceived, as well as describing the international reactions that followed, the basic technology, prospects for realization, and its potential effect on society.
